Light:The avocado needs as much light as possible. A bright, sunny window is best.
Water:Never allow the plant to dry out. Give it plenty of water especially in the summer.
Temp:The temperature must be at least 64 degrees.
Soil:Sow in light, porous soil. Young, rapidly growing plants should be planted in
Fertilizer:The young plants are constantly hungry and need a lot of feeding. Use liquid plantfood at least once a month.
Pests:Coconut mealybug, redbanded thrips, fruit flies, black twig borer.
Special Care:Leafy plants should be cut back in the spring to obtain a more bushy plant.
Flower Color:The flowers are a yellowy-green and have a lovely scent. It is very rare for the
avocado to flower outside its natural habitat.
Growth Habit:The avocado rarely grows to more than 3-4 feet in the home. It grows rapidly in the
beginning but will later slow down almost to a stop.
Fun Fact:The inside of the fruit has a "buttery" consistency and has been known as "soldiers
butter," since it was not considered to be as fine as real butter. The avocado containsmore oil and calories than any other fruit. The oil is extracted and used by the cosmetics industry and the fruit is an excellent remedy for dry skin.
